I decided to share a summary of the most effective ways to protect our eyes from modern daily “killers.”
1. Blue Light and the 20-20-20 Rule
The biggest enemy is blue light from LED screens. It penetrates deep into the retina and causes oxidative stress. Be sure to use blue light filters (Night Shift, f.lux, or special glasses with a yellowish tint). Even more important – follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at an object at least 20 feet (6 meters) away for 20 seconds. This allows the ciliary muscle to relax and significantly reduces eye strain.
2. Humidity and Blinking
When we stare at screens, we blink 5–6 times less often than normal. This leads to dry eyes and micro-damage to the cornea. Use preservative-free artificial tears (preferably with hyaluronic acid), a room humidifier, and make conscious efforts to blink fully. If you work with air conditioning or heating on, this is even more important!
3. Proper Lighting and Posture
Never work in the dark with a bright screen. The contrast between the screen and the surrounding environment should be soft. Ideal lighting is behind you or from the side. The screen should be at eye level or slightly below, and the distance should be 50–70 cm. Poor posture additionally strains the neck and indirectly worsens blood circulation to the eyes.
4. Nutrition and Antioxidants
Vision is also protected from the inside. Lutein and zeaxanthin are essential – they are found in spinach, kale, broccoli, corn, and eggs. Aim for at least 6–10 mg of lutein per day. Omega-3 fatty acids from fish or flaxseed reduce inflammation and improve the tear film. Vitamins A, C, E, and zinc are also very important. If your diet isn’t rich enough, a quality supplement with lutein + zeaxanthin can be very helpful.
5. Rest and Physical Activity
Eyes recover best when we sleep in complete darkness. Avoid screens at least 1–2 hours before bedtime. Regular walks outdoors (especially in nature) reduce the risk of progressing myopia and improve blood circulation. 30–40 minutes of moderate exercise daily works wonders.
Personally, I combine blue-light-filter glasses, 10 mg lutein daily, strict adherence to the 20-20-20 rule, and a humidifier in the office. After 3 months, the result is noticeably less eye fatigue and clearer vision in the evening.
